🧩 Apple Activities for Letter-Sound Recognition

Use this resource in your reading center, as a guided reading activity, or as a whole class exercise (see below) to give students a chance to use their phonological awareness knowledge.

The students will match alphabet apples with images that begin with the same letter sound, then match those apples to a corresponding apple tree. This set includes 3 sorting cards for each letter, and a sorting mat for each letter of the alphabet.

Place this activity in a learning center or within a small group and set them to work matching letters with words that begin with the same sound.

Scaffolding & Extension Tips + More Letter Sound Correspondence Activities

Challenge students who already understand the concept to produce additional words with the same letter sound correspondence.

Support students who need help understanding the concepts by using a visual reminder of letter sounds such as an alphabet display.

Use this resource as independent practice for fast finishers and for full-class learning opportunities like scoot activities, lesson reviews, comprehension assessments, and more.

👀 Scavenger Hunt

Hide the apple pieces around the room when your students are not around and put the apple trees in the center of the room. Then set your students loose! As soon as they find a piece they bring it up to the picture card, repeat the letter sound on the card, and put it on the matching tree. NOTE: You may want to make a rule of only 1 student at a card at one time. If not, things could get a little crazy!
