What Is Repeated Addition? Definition for Kids

Teaching students the fundamental concepts of multiplication can be an exciting time for both you and your students! There are many different strategies that students will learn, including arrays, equal groups, skip counting and more. Another strategy that young learners will practise is using repeated addition to solve a multiplication problem. So, how do you explain this concept to your students? Let’s take a quick look!

Repeated addition is when you add the same number over and over again. This can be shown with pictures, such as equal group models, or just the number sentence.

If we look at the example 3 + 3 + 3 + 3, one way to solve this add 3 together 4 times. Alternatively, we can write it as 3 × 4, which means adding 3 four times. That’s like saying 3 added together 4 times!
